I've used woodshavings for two of the three hamsters I've had since 2005, and they've had no problems with it. On a practical note; the handle could be improved and made stronger, it always breaks when I buy it and I've got to lug it home on the bus.

I have seen considerable evidence to link woodshavings and other softwood based beddings with health problems in small animals, especially respiratory problems and liver damage. Paper and cardboard based beddings are much safer.
