I have seen considerable evidence to link softwood based beddings with health problems in small rodents, especially respiratory problems and liver damage. Paper and cardboard based beddings are much safer.

I use this bedding at the moment (I used to use the shredded papper but they kept on sneezing). The rat's do prefer the wood litter but it is very dusty and I have to sweep under their cage on a daily basis. I am going to try the carefresh bedding as it is said to be softer and less dusty.

I use this litter just in our rabbits litter tray and it does the job. It expands when its wet so its quite easy to clean out regularly.
