Degu

Product Description:

Degus make good pets for older children or adults. They are easy to look after, and with plenty of time and attention become very tame, being friendly and inquisitive. They are very intelligent and love to play and explore.

Degus should be kept in same-sex pairs or groups - they thrive in this social situation. They tend to be happier and healthier when kept together, and this way they have a play mate and someone to snuggle up with to sleep! You should buy degus together if they are to live together, so they are already friends.

Guinea Pig nuggets (not muesli) and Chinchilla pellets are ideal feed for your Degus, however it is important to feed them what they are used to as this will prevent any stress a change of food may cause. Your Degus diet should also be supplemented with added hay, as an additional source of dietary fibre.

o Degus usually live on average for 6-8 years with the correct care.

Pets at Home will only sell Degus in pairs, please consider this before deciding upon a Degu as the pet for you.

For more information on Degus, please refer to the Pets at Home Care Guide for Degu , available free online.

Degus are specialist pets and should not be taken on without careful thought. They have quite specific housing and dietary needs so please research these carefully before taking them on. There are many degus in rescue looking for new homes. They are not easy to find homes for so many wait months or even years for a new home.

I owned a Degu for 7 years & he was fab!! He loved having his belly tickled & would lift his front leg for you to do it for him!! Degus are fantastic pets & it's a shame not a lot of people know that much about them. Anyone with the opportunity to have a couple of these guys in their life should go for it because they are so rewarding & entertaining.

I own 3 degus (1 being the mother and the other 2 are her babies). They are easy to look after and are very entertaining to watch and, with plenty of care, they become very tame. Mine even love to be scratched under their chin! Aslong as they have a big enough cage with plenty of toys to amuse and a lot of care they are the perfect pet!
