Tarantulas are relatively simple invertebrates to keep and make great pets for older children and adults. Spiders can be delicate so children must be supervised if handling them. Whilst simple to care for, they can be a long-term commitment as these spiders can live for around 10 years for males and females of some species may live for much longer, over 20 years in some cases. They do not need a great deal of space and their needs can be easily met in any modern home. There are many species available to buy as pets, this guide covers their general care, but always check the specific requirements of the species you are interested in.
They love to hide in suitable caves so they need stable rock caves or other hiding places. They may also enjoy digging tunnels in the substrate so a substrate which allows them to do this is required. There are specific spider substrates available that are ideal for this purpose.
Tarantulas do not have the same needs for company as many mammals and should only be kept on their own. It is often not possible to sex them when they are small but males are smaller than mature females. Sexing is possible by carefully examining a shed skin, or the underside of the tarantula, but this should be researched thoroughly before attempting. Mature males of some species have large mating hooks that can be used to sex them.
Gentle regular handling of juveniles will help to get them used to being handled, but spiders are delicate. You can hold them gently in one hand but always make sure that they cannot jump off of your hand and injure themselves.
All vets have a basic understanding of invertebrates but those with a specialist interest are worth seeking out. Insurance against unexpected veterinary costs is available in just the same way as it is for cats and dogs.If your pet shows any signs of being unwell contact your vet as soon as possible.
