We have developed our own Responsible Retailing plan
At Pets at Home, we are keenly aware of the responsibility retailers such as ourselves have within the communities in which we operate - and the environment that we all live in.
As we expanded over the years, we recognised that our weight of responsibility in these areas grew, so we developed our Responsible Retailing plan.
For us, Responsible Retailing is supported by three pillars:
- Caring for the Environment
- Sourcing with Integrity
- Our Pets People
Caring for the Environment
Caring for the environment means looking at every area of our business and analysing ways in which we can be greener. We have reduced the amount of waste we produce and now divert 75 per cent of the rubbish we do create away from landfill sites; through investment in vehicles and driver training, since 2008 we have reduced carbon emissions and fuel usage from our fleet vehicles by 30 per cent - while transporting 50 per cent more cargo.
On top of this, we have opened many new stores but reduced our total electricity usage by four per cent since 2008, thanks to the use of smarter lighting systems.Find out more
Sourcing with Integrity
All our pet suppliers - are regularly inspected to ensure that our pets are receiving the high standards of care that we expect.
This approach is not just limited to our pet suppliers either: we've developed an Ethical Trading Code which we use to check on the conduct of our PAH branded suppliers worldwide.
We're always reviewing the products we sell to ensure pet welfare is at the heart of everything we do. For example, we recently phased out the sale of rabbit muesli in our store after veterinary research linked it to health and dental.Find out more
Our Pets People
Our Support Adoption for Pets charity provides financial assistance to animal welfare and rehoming centres, while our colleagues work tirelessly to operate its in-store adoption centres. We care for our colleagues too; 2013 saw Pets at Home take the prized number one spot in the Sunday Times' Best Big Companies to Work for list.
