Horned frogs are ideal pets for older children and adults. They are fur, feather and dust free so will not cause any of the allergic reactions that may be associated with other pets, and do not smell if maintained correctly.
They grow to about 15cm long, and nearly as wide (males slightly smaller) and most start life bright green, but change to mixes of brown, yellow, green and orange. They have raised projections above their eyes, leading to the name Horned Frog. With the correct care, Horned Frogs can live for up to 10 years, so please be aware that these animals may be a long-term commitment.
Horned frogs should only be kept singly, they are not really territorial, but may try to eat cage mates.
Horned frogs bury in the substrate so this needs to be of a good depth, and kept clean, they should be always be given the opportunity to burrow down, as this is their preferred lifestyle.
Disposable gloves that are not covered in powder may be used to prevent damage to the frogs skin.
Frogs may try and swell up if they are not used to being handled, if this happens return the frog to its home and leave it to calm down.
Horned frogs are generally very hardy animals and do not normally suffer from many health problems. If a problem does occur, the majority consist of bacterial and fungal infections. These usually develop if the frog has been stressed; for example by high temperature, incorrect humidity or poor handling.Always seek veterinary advice if your frog appears unwell.
