Blue-tongued skinks are a relatively easy lizard to keep and make great pets for older children and adults. Smaller lizards can be delicate so younger children must be supervised when handling them. These lizards are diurnal, which means they are active during the day, and can live for over 20 years. They get fairly large, around 60cm, so need an appropriately sized vivarium to live in.

Blue-tongued skinks can become very tame, and many owners liken their behaviour to that of a dog or cat, they appear to like human interaction and become very tame.

Blue-tongued skinks do not have the same needs for company as many mammals and can be kept on their own. It is often not possible to sex them when they are small but mature males tend to have larger heads in proportion to their body size and a thicker base of the tail due to their hemipenes.< BR/>
All vets have a basic understanding of reptiles but those with a specialist interest are worth seeking out. Insurance against unexpected veterinary costs is available in just the same way as it is for cats and dogs.
