The Mary Rat Cage by Ferplast has been especially designed by Ferplast for rats.

Constructed of a non-toxic plastic base and wire upper structure made of plastic coated iron, it offers a wide, comfortable habitat for your small friends.

This is very good for a syrian hamster as it has plenty of room for it to roam around and there is lots of room for toys. It has much more room than any other syrian hamster cage and is therefore the reason why i bought it. The only improvement i would say is that it would be nice if the cage had some sort of platform. Other than this i think this cage is brilliant for a syrian hamster. Maybe a bit too small for rats.

The height of this cage is 37cm not 27cm.

This is what I would consider a small rat cage or large hamster cage. I recently bought one for a rat of mine who because of his life before living with me, is very nervous and I thought he would be happier in a smaller living space. He loves it, in his old cage he sat in the corner in this one he spends far more time investigating the accessories I have put in there for him.
There is room for him to stand on his back legs and I have fitted a shelf (similar to those in the Ferplast Jenny) which gives an extra amount of floor space.
I wouldn't recommend this for more than one rat (unless it's a doe and her kittens). Males are known to prefer more floor space to climbing space, Like others have said it is brilliant for rats with special circumstances; kittens, nerves, recovery from sickness etc. The majority of rats though would thank you for the extra height.
You could get inventive with the space available however and also it is a perfect candidate for adding to another cage what with it's large door on top.

The one really annoying thing about this is that the water bottle that came with mine did not fit on the cage, the attachment was too big, as was the spout which would not fit through the bars!

brought this for my syrian hamster Gus this morning, better than any hamster cage enough room for plenty of toys so won't get bored and will get enough exersice when I'm at work over night. not big enough for a rat.

Please please please don't get this cage for rats. It's not big enough for them to stand upright and climb, it's only suitable for use as a Hospital cage or a segregation/nursery cage. Some website cage calculators reckon this is big enough for two rats, but it's not. If you want to keep rats, splash out the extra twenty five pounds for a bigger cage. Rats would be bored to tears and depressed in this cage. A hamster would love it though.

While this is a brilliant cage for nursing mums and rats recovering from operations, it is not suitable as permanent housing for rats as it doesn't offer the climbing space that they require.
Much better permanent alternatives sold by pets at home are the ferplast furet plus and ferplast Jenny cages.

As a permanent rat cage it gets no stars from me, as a hamster cage or a nursing/hospital cage for rats it would get 4/5 stars

This cage is far too small for rats but would make a great cage for a Syrian Hamster, as someone has already said. It could also be used for nursing mums or as a temporary cage but should be sold as such, not as a long-term home for adult rats. Apart from that it is a decently made cage.

This cage isn't really large or tall enough for rats as they should be able to climb and have many different levels, however it'd be a great cage for a hamster.

While this isn't suitable for rats long term, a good use is for a nursery! If your female rat has babies, it's best to move them into a cage like this. It will be safer for the babies as mum can't give birth too high up where they might fall. It is also easier for mum to get food and water and still stay close the the babies. Another use is for if you go on holiday. It's not always possible to take a big cage away for the weekend but if you plan on taking your rats this could serve this purpose. A final use could be if you have an ill or disabled rat.
