Chihuahuas are typically loyal, loving and bursting with energy. Their tiny size and big character has made them a popular small breed in households around the world. Sometimes, Chihuahuas can be fussy eaters yet easily gain weight without adequate exercise or with overfeeding. As a brachycephalic breed they are also susceptible to overheating. Excellent skin and coat condition and a good digestive function are important for large breed dogs and are a sign of overall general good health. Their AVA breed health formulation is especially tempting, containing a source of quality chicken protein for sensitive stomachs, with a smaller kibble for easy feeding, prebiotics for digestive health and added Glucosamine and Chondroitin.

Important information:

Care & behaviour: Chihuahuas require an effective care routine along with good food nutrition to help manage their skin and coat condition, body size and general wellbeing.

Grooming: Weekly brushing to encourage natural oil release and less frequent grooming to remove seasonal shedding.

General health & teeth: Regularly check eyes to ensure they are clear, clean, and healthy looking. Check for signs of weight gain by weighing regularly as this can occur quickly in small breeds. Check for weakness, disorientation or unusual behaviour that may indicate low energy levels. Wearing a coat outside may reduce their shivering when cold (normally nothing to worry about). Regularly check dental hygiene (training to accept teeth brushing as a puppy will help maintain oral health).

Exercise & play: Typically 30 minutes exercise per day (although they love to run and play keep an eye on their energy levels, in hot weather care should be taken not to over exert them). Chihuahuas can be very intelligent, often vocal in warning of new sights, sounds and smells (training will be more successful when started early, made fun and backed up with praise and healthy rewards!).

They advise that you only feed this AVA kibble to Chihuahuas from 8 months old. Weigh out the daily feeding amount and divide into 2 equal portions to feed to your dog at regular times each day. Be careful not to overfeed and if you give treats, reduce the amount of food given to allow for the calories in the treats. They also recommend that you weigh your dog regularly to help manage their food intake and to spot any signs of weight change early on.
