Sea monkeys are one of those curious little marvels that feel halfway between science experiment and childhood magic. Technically, they’re a type of brine shrimp (Artemia salina), but what makes them fascinating is how they come to life from what looks like dust — just add water, and suddenly you’ve got a tank full of tiny, wiggling creatures. They’re marketed as “instant pets,” and there’s something oddly satisfying about watching them grow, swim, and even reproduce right in your miniature aquarium. Are they the most exciting pets in the world? Not really. But there’s a quiet charm to their simplicity, almost like having a living lava lamp on your desk. They turn science into play, and that’s a rare kind of joy.

The classic Ocean Zoo aquarium is the ideal tank to watch your Sea Monkeys hatch and grow. The Ocean Zoo has a built in ventilated lid and detailed moulded seascape bottom. Keep a close eye on your Sea Monkeys through the cool magnifying portal!

To bring them to life, all you need is water! Add the Sea-Monkeys eggs and you are ready for instant life! Feed them and watch them grow up to 2 cm! Follow the instructions carefully and begin your new amazing hobby. Each kit includes everything you need to grow your own Sea-Monkeys.

Sea-Monkeys should begin hatching right away and depending on a whole lot of variables can take up to 3 weeks for them all to hatch. If you find they are slow to hatch or something strange has occurred, try moving the tank (if not already) to a warmer or another position where they receive good natural sunlight. In colder environments Sea-Monkeys can take longer for them all to hatch and grow, and the ideal hatching temperature is between 24 and 27 degrees Celsius (75-to-80-degree Fahrenheit) which is well noted in the instructions.

All Sea-Monkey eggs vary in shell thickness. Those with thinner shells begin hatching immediately and those with thicker shells take longer. This is nature's way. Different types of water, different temperatures and different light sources will also affect the hatching rate. They are so small when they first hatch, they are difficult to see with the naked eye. A good idea is to shine an LED light into the side of the tank and look very hard. The light will reflect off the tiny white specks (no bigger than the period at the end of this sentence) twitching through the water as they spread their fins and learn to swim. A magnifying glass will also assist you in spotting them when they are freshly hatched and extremely small. Keep checking daily looking closely. Your Sea-Monkey pets may continue to hatch over a three-week period as they wiggle their way through their shell casings.

Product Care:

Water temperature: It is vital that you refer to the temperature chart on the instruction leaflet, the colder the water the longer it will take for your Sea-Monkeys eggs to hatch. The ideal temperature for the fastest hatching and ideal growth conditions is between 24 and 27 degrees Celsius (75-to-80-degree Fahrenheit).

Healthy light: Place your tank near a window so that it gets indirect sunlight, but do not place it directly in the sun. This will help algae to grow which the Sea-Monkeys love to eat.

Evaporation: If you notice the water level decreasing in your tank, refill with bottled drinking water which is at the same temperature as the tank water. While the water evaporates, the salt content will not evaporate. Simply adding water will bring it back to the ideal salt level perfect for your pet Sea-Monkeys.

Feeding & Nutrition: In the beginning feed your Sea-Monkey pets once a week with one level scoop of Sea-Monkey Growth Food. If the water becomes cloudy you have over fed. Quit feeding until the water clears up. As green algae grow in their tank, they will feast on that as well and you can decrease the amount of food you feed them.

Aeration: A good way to aerate the water in your tank providing extra oxygen to keep them healthy is to gently pour the contents of your tank in to another clean container. Repeat this process a couple of times once or twice a week. It will not harm them.

Warnings and Safety:

Choking Hazard: Contains small parts which can be swallowed.

I bought this item for my neices birthday, she'd always wanted one, even though she turned 15. So we went to our local store in Dagenham. Where we picked up the kit. It's so easy to set up, with clear instructions on how to first hatch them, and then feed them. Such an easy way of introducing children to aquatic life, and also giving them a responsibility. Would buy again.

  • Harder than you think.

Followed instructions to the letter and they died soon after it got busy. Customer service sent me a new set of sachets to try again and so far so good. If you explain to them they are helpful.

I've noticed some bad reviews but PLEASE remember this: Follow the instructions to the letter. Use a magnifying glass after 5 hours of addubng eggs - you'll see RESULTS. Fascinating hobby.

        • Unsuccessful

I followed instructions carefully but to my dismay there were no signs of life. I would try again but I can't just buy the sachets, I would have to buy the whole thing again which... no. Maybe stock refills of the sachets.
